For
Authors
Authors
have a different range of needs from publishers and other
organizations. Publishers know how long a project should take and make
projections to come up with a budget; authors often have no idea of the
process or expense. Publishers have established standards,
specifications, and styles; authors usually have a draft manuscript and
a lot of questions. In my experience, a single-round edit is
a
disservice to authors, regardless of whether the goal is traditional or
self-publishing. A simple proofread is always inadequate and often
impossible. Any attentive reading of the manuscript will kick out
problems that require some action on the author's part, and any action
on the author's part means that the editor must
take another gander at the revised draft. It's just the way things
work. Below are ballpark
estimates for typical projects. My actual quote for a project is based
on how long I calculate a project should take, using factors such as
word count and how close the manuscript is to being ready for
publication. I require a sample of 5-10 pages from the middle of the
manuscript. I will return a sample edit on 3-5 of those pages with
feedback and a quote. There is no charge for the sample edit.
- Short Works
up to 20,000 Words ($0.07/word)
Includes first-round edit for story/structure problems and significant issues the author will want to address; second-round copyedit; third-round review of revisions; manuscript formatted for submission to publisher/agent or e-book upload. Additional rounds of revisions are not unusual and charges will apply. - Long Works up
to 100,000 Words ($4,000 and up)
Includes first-round edit for story/structure problems and significant issues the author will want to address; second-round copyedit. Additional rounds of revisions are not unusual and charges will apply. I strongly recommend proofreading by another set of eyes. - Proofreading
($0.02/word)
I will proofread uploaded e-books, galleys, or final draft manuscript pages, but only for books that have been professionally edited. I do not proofread long works that I have edited myself. - Coaching
($50/hour)
I will provide feedback and guidance for authors who want it. This is not a manuscript critique or beta read—if I have to read an entire book, given my hourly rate, a package deal provides more bang for the buck. Coaching is for writers who have a goal in mind and a problem they need help getting past to reach their goal.
